Start me up!

One of the perks of being a member of the Amsterdam Citycouncil is the invites you get for fun and interesting things. One of those was being asked to judge at the Startup weekend that was held at Pakhuis de Zwijger last weekend. The reason one of the sponsors asked me is that I'm strongly advocating the connection between economy and sustainability, aka greenjobs. That's why I presented the award for most sustainable startup. I chose GoCaramba!, which helps people to share a car, a sort of carpool 2.0.

The idea behind the Startup Weekend is quite simple: put together entrepreneurs, designers, techies, etc and have them decide amongst themselves which ideas will be developed over the weekend. At the end a jury will decide which startups will be most likely to make a mllion dollars first, has the best pitch and is overall winner. It is a formula that is done in other cities as well, and I was told that members of one of the winning pitches at this event had also won with other ideas at two earlier events.

It was fun and it was interesting! Fun because it's always nice to see people working hard, and playing hard. And it was interesting to see all these people from all over the world coming to Amsterdam to develop their ideas into a real business. In the jury were a few venture capitalists, so who knows, will we see some of the businesses be the next Facebook......
